Learning points from “Code Red” Trauma Sim
1. Use transfer checklist prior to CT transfers (at wall at rear of each resus bay) to ensure safe transfers
2. Using pod to send blood sample to lab adds up to 50mins delay to type specific/crossmatch blood
3. Must ensure patient remains unknown in ED once booked in as such. Reception team must not update details whilst in ED to ensure blood not rejected.
4. Code Red flowchart is available on OCEANO > Patient Advice > Major Trauma > ED Code Red Trauma Protocol. Can print out to use pre-arrival checklist. (Consider updating to include 2 x X-match samples to facilitate quicker availability of subsequent packs (NJ))
5. If blood not required, do not open seal and return box to lab within 3hrs. Call lab to cancel major haemorrhage pack.
6. Log-roll 10-15 degrees only to extricate from scoop (avoid unnecessary movement of pelvis – can exacerbate bleeding). Only full log-roll for ABC problem. Trauma CT assessment of spinal injury (don’t delay scan)
7. Need standard approach with Kendrick splint application for major trauma femoral shaft #s in ED.
8. On falling BP, great use of “horizon scanning” from TTL - ensuring team aware no CPR in event of traumatic cardiac arrest. Planning for traumatic cardiac arrest protocol.
9. Docs to be mindful of nursing task overload. Nurses empowered to ask docs to help when task overloaded (eg. answer phones!!)
